According to Wikipedia the 18th amendment to the United States Constitution went into effect January 16, 1920 and forbid the fermenting, distillation, importing and sales of alcoholic spirits and beverages anywhere in the country. The 18th amendment was repealed with the 21st amendment effective December 5, 1933.
