1937 220HP Enterprise DSW 6
Manufactured by the Enterprise Engine Company of San Francisco California in 1937. 6 cylinder diesel with a 10 inch bore,
13 inch stroke, 6126 cubic inches displacement. 254mm bore, 330.2mm stroke, 100.4 liters displacement.
220 HP -- 164.1kW at 450 RPM. Weight 33,100 lbs. – 15010kg., cost $23,600 installed. Generator: Westinghouse 16 pole, 150 kW,
three phase, 480 volt AC. Exciter 4.5 kW, 126 volt DC. This is one of three generators that were used for backup power at
Palomar Observatory from 1938 to 1996. The time on this generator after 58 years at Palomar was only 4800 hours.
(Editors note:Gas engine row Volunteers say “back up power”, but the caption beneath a photo-copied photo (below) says
three Enterprise diesel generators provide “All electricity requirements”. While the Observatory website history time
line, mentions water and electricity brought to the site during 1936 Dome construction, I find no mention of these diesel generators
on their website.) Donated to our Museum in 1996, this engine was
one of only two model W engines ever built with enclosed valve gear. Most model W engines built were for use in marine
applications and carried a DMW-4 or 6 designation. All of the DMW engines had exposed valve gear. Only a few DSW engines were made.
This one was the second and the last built with special enclosed valve gear. We believe the other DSW-6 built with enclosed
valve gear was S/N 6109 with an original owner designated in the listing as "Dunn & Baker". We do not believe this engine
exists any longer. It appears that this may well be the only existing version of an enclosed valve gear DSW-6.
