During the last weekend of September we held the All Association Campout and Jam at the Antique Gas and
Steam Engine Museum in Vista, CA. We had 27 camping units, and more than a dozen day visitors. This wasn’t the
largest turnout we’ve ever had, but it was extremely friendly and fun. Jams started in the morning, and some
continued until 2AM.
On Saturday night we had a really great potluck. During the potluck we had a presentation from Barb and Bud Watson
who were representing the Museum. They were a great help to our campout by bringing tables to our potluck, and
providing rubbish containers for the campout. They are the people who run the South of the Border food service
during the various shows. Jeanette Stevens, President, of the Museum also gave a presentation, and gave programs
with discount tickets for the next antique show in October.
During the dinner, we were entertained by a group called “Lincoln Street” who did a great job, and were encouraged
to do an encore performance. After dinner, everyone began forming the jam sessions, which would be judged later.
We had four official jam sessions, “The Four Winds”, “Spanky Pants and the Skillet Lickers”, “Bottom Feeders”, and
the “Coyote Blue”.
We used some grinners, as judges who would be impartial to the groups. This was really difficult, and caused
the judges to make return trips to make their decisions. Coyote Blue, Hosted by Susan and Eric Bentley undoubtedly
had the greatest ambiance, with candles, bottles of wine, glasses and an American flag. The Bottom Feeders were on
top of their game with a large group, and no shortage of refreshments. The Four Winds were at the top of the
advanced musical talent doing an eclectic variation of music styles. They appeared more as a professional band.
The winner was finally picked as being “Spanky Pants and the Skillet Lickers”. The performance that made the final
decision was Mule Skinner Blues, which was sung by Jo Parrish, with her beautiful hard driving voice.
We are planning to do the same campout next year, same time and same place.
