1912 Union Tool Company, “Ideal” type K, Torrance, California. 1 Cylinder four-cycle, hit and miss governing.
12-1/2 inch bore, 20 inch stroke, 2454 cubic inch displacement. 317.5mm bore, 508mm stroke, 40.21 liter displacement.
30HP -- 22.37kW -- at 210 RPM. Flywheel 6 feet 1 inch -- 1.854m – diameter. This engine ran a Southern California oil
well-drilling rig, and was then used to pump the wells near it. The Union Tool Company made these engines in a type A and
a type K configuration. In the type A, the base plate extends beneath the cylinder, providing more support. Type K was
made in sizes of 20, 25, 30 and 35 HP. Type K was used for all kinds of pumping, irrigating and general power work.
Made with both a high and a low compression head. Usually high compression heads were used with lower grades of gas and
low compression heads with higher grades of gas. The poppet type valves -- both intake and exhaust are in easily removed
cages -- open directly into the cylinder or combustion chamber. The cylinder is fitted with a water-jacketed auxiliary
exhaust port, which reduces the temperature of the gases passing through the exhaust valve. Restored and donated to our
Museum by Terry Hathaway. These engines are extremely rare.
