1950s LeRoi diesel/gasoline air compressor. We use this compressor for supplying starting air to many of the large engines on the row. These compressors were often used in construction applications or military conditions where compressed air was needed in large volumes. The engine in this compressor can be run on either gasoline or diesel. There is a valve in the head of each cylinder that can be opened or closed by moving a lever. When the valve is open, this opens an extra chamber containing the sparkplug up to the piston and reduces the compression ratio. When the engine is warmed up this valve is closed and the injectors are turned on, causing the engine to run on diesel fuel. This is a design similar to certain International Harvester engines.
