Friday, June 1, started out cool and overcast, but that didn’t stop Bob Morely from having a long list of jobs. He assigned Steve Clark and Red Bradshaw the task of transferring scrap into the proper dumpsters and then cleaning out the empty dumpster so they could load them up with more scrap. Not sure how many dumpsters they loaded up but the back hill looked a lot better when they finished up.
Back in the storage area Hugh Mudd and Dwight Reed were
taking bolts from the storage truck and sorting them into bins. Jim Goode and Keith Richards were getting the grills
ready for show breakfast. Harold Davis and Guy Horton unpacked and sorted ropes used to mark off the display area.
Guy went to help Ernie Walker water the trees around the Museum while Ray and Aleta Whitehead started checking the
sprinkler system, and then onto weeding and mowing around the campground. Mike Churchill was busy with hose and
brushes washing some of the trailers in the VAA. Thanks Mike!!
Sally Morley, Irene Rodgers, Jim Goode and Keith
Richards were in the Club building putting together lunch. Myrna Bagge kept busy washing the tables (which the
fellows carried in from outside). Steve Clark, Harold Davis, Guy Horton, Ray Hunt and Bob Morley put the shades up
over the BBQ area. Saw Eric McConnon working on an engine at Gas Engine row. Richard Green was seen picking up trash
and helping wherever it was needed. Myrna Bagge, Jim Goode and Keith Richards put together the frames for the
awnings on the parade route. While Jack Lester did the same for the snack shop.
Saturday, June 2, turned out to be
a “cool” day with a few sprinkles. The sun never did come out but we kept working. What a great crew we had. I had a
hard time keeping up with what and where everyone was doing. Hope I didn’t miss anyone. The Koppenhoefer family was here
again (from Las Vegas) to help. Bob Morley put Bob and Bobbie K. to work cleaning out the ditch that was
dug (last work party) from the restroom to the back of the new machine shop. Bob K. had a time breaking out some of the
foundation so they could get to the electrical hookups. That was one long and hot job!!! Later Bob Morley laid the
pipe for the electrical lines.
Ray Hunt, Charles Bradshaw, Chet Huffman and Harold Davis, loaded tables from the
Assembly Building and hauled them to the BBQ area. Also saw them hunting up chairs from other locations and
transporting them to Jacks Snack Shop and the BBQ area. Later Harold Davis, Stan Dehart, Charles “Red” Bradshaw and
Melissa Robinson unfolded those chairs and set them up in the BBQ area. Meanwhile, Stan Dehart, Myrna Bagge, Roger Meier,
Mike Churchill, Keith Richards, and Kent Graham were laying out the new sunshades on the pole frames for the parade route.
Seems Myrna bought the material and sewed the shades.
Guy and Forrest Horton were untangling the ropes and sorting the
stanchions for the display areas. They also had to dig out many of the postholes around gas engine row as they had
been covered up by dirt. Later Melissa Robinson was helping Chuck Allee repair one of the hay wagons. Ray and Aleta
Whitehead were mowing the grass in the campground area. Bob Morely sent Ray Hunt to help Ron Whitson do some clean
up in the back of the Blacksmith shop. I spotted Nicholas and Stan Foraker pruning trees and cutting down a palm tree.
Gary Clare and Larry Thompson took a trip to Home Depot to purchase plywood so Pat Myers could frame up the front wall
in the Machine Shop. Jim Goode and Rudy Dremely came to help also. They had quite a job putting that wall up.
Connie Morton, and her helpers Harold Davis, Chet Huffman, Kim Mitchell, Stan Dehart, Rodger Meier, and Red Bradshaw,
moved the schoolhouse furniture out of the farmhouse. Just before lunch, Harold Davis, Ray Hunt, Charles Bradshaw and
Bobbie Koppenhoefer hauled more tables into the Club building.
They were pretty dirty so Debbie Koppenhoefer got a
bucket and washed them all down. Of course Sally Morely (Yea!!), Irene Rodgers and Joan Huffman were setting out a
feast for lunch. After lunch, Steve Clark, Harold Davis, Kent Graham, Guy Horton, Bob Morley, Ray Hunt, Keith Richards,
and Myrna Bagge started putting up the new sunshades on the parade route. Earlier Mike Churchill and Keith Richards
made new clips, out of PVC pipe, for the new sunshades. Jack Lester was busy putting up the awnings for the snack shop.
I helped him for a bit and then Keith Richards, Myrna Bagge and Rudy Dremely decided to help with the placement of the
awnings and attaching the shades.
Jerry Hass was busy taking pictures. Saw Eric McConnon was working on that engine
on Gas Engine row again. He came running over to the snack shack with a big grin yelling, “it runs, it runs”! He
got the “Clark engine” to fire up and run for a bit. Besides ramroding all these tasks, Bob Morley took a crew
(Stan Dehart, and Charles Bradshaw) up to the back hill to help him cut tires. What a fun job!!!
Ron Whitson,
Bobby Koppenhoefer, Roger Meier and Ray Hunt started sorting and putting nuts and bolts away in the storage area.
Jeanette Stevens and Debbie Koppenhoefer were just a sweeping and a cleaning, getting the Parlor ready for show.
Saw Jack Lester working on a refrigerator for the new kitchen. Later Jack and Kim Mitchell put together a new grill.
Richard Green was busy filling in ruts in our fabulous roads. Jim Goode decided to pressure wash the screens in
the snack shack area.
Keith Richards made some repairs on the little ice cream machine that the bakeshop uses for
pie a-la-mode. Mike Churchill was mister handy man fixing the faucets in the kitchen. I even saw Jack Lester
on a tractor mowing along the side of the hill across from steam traction area. Man, I sure had a time keeping up with
these folks and all the work they were doing!!!
Sunday, June 3, started with Dave Carroll, Jim Goode, Bob Koppenhoefer,
and Bob Morley laying pipe and pulling electrical wires in the trench Bob K. cleaned out yesterday. Later I saw
Bob and Bobby Koppenhoefer, Dave Carroll and Bob Morley were busy with shovels filling in the ditch.
Jack Lester was mowing around the street signs at the entry way and then did the parking lot. From there he went to do
show preparations for the snack shack. Saw Kent Graham working on the sewer line for the bathroom at Steam Engine row,
along with Mike Churchill fixing the water faucet on the outside sink.
Bobby and Dylan Koppenhoefer with Forrest Horton
went up to the back hill to sort plastic and cans into the proper recycle bins. Jeanette Stevens and Debbie Koppenhoefer
were finishing up the cleaning in the kitchen and parlor. Jerry Hass was helping Chuck Allee with finishing up
repairs on the hay wagon.
Robert Richardson and Jake Williams loaded the steamroller onto a truck -- David Denny pictures above -- so they could
take it to Long Beach for repairs. Guy and Forrest Horton finished putting up the display ropes they started on
yesterday, while Keith Richards was making more clips for the new shades.
Sally Morley and Irene Rodgers were
preparing lunch for our hard working crew. Richard Green was using the backhoe again while Myrna Bagge, Dave Carroll
and Bob Koppenhoefer were busy chopping weeds and making the grounds look better.
WOW, WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND!!
